By now your lawn and garden should be thriving! The garden you planted and your newly seeded lawn have been soaking up that sunshine and pulling moisture from the earth – while this environment is perfect for growth, it’s also ideal for those pesky weeds that keep popping up. Here’s some helpful tips to prevent weeds from growing in your garden.  

Mulch

Mulch is a great way to slow the growth of weeds in your garden as it limits the amount of light that can reach the weeds, suppressing them. When adding the mulch to your garden, make sure you keep the depth around 2 inches or so over your soil, anything more can deprive the soil from oxygen. Mulch will help plants by keeping the soil nice and cool.

Weeding

Maybe the obvious option, but pulling weeds from your garden and lawn can be a rewarding and satisfying task. If you’re persistent enough, one by one your lawn and garden will eventually be weed free. Nearly. Make sure you have a good pair of gloves and pad for your knees. There are also great tools out there that will save your back!

Watering

When watering your garden, only water the plants and the soil around the plants, not the whole garden bed. Weeds need water too, so limiting the amount of water will keep the weeds to a minimum. This is more difficult with your lawn.

Sprays

Using a selective organic herbicide is a great, safe way to stop weeds from growing in your garden and on your lawn. These herbicides target certain weeds before they grow. There are stronger sprays on the market – be sure to ask for assistance at your local home centre for more information about the sprays they sell before using. 

Vinegar

If you’re looking for a safer way to remove weeds from your lawn and garden, white vinegar is a great, natural solution. Using a spray bottle, simply spray near the root system and leaves. Be patient, the weed should die within a few days.
