When the snow starts, it’s quite magical. Then follows the realization that you’re in for the long and strenuous task of removing it all from your deck! Proper snow removal sounds obvious but here’s some helpful tips to help extend the lifespan of your investments.  

The Right Tools

Whether your deck is wooden or composite, a sturdy snow shovel with a plastic blade is an excellent choice as it minimizes the risk of scratching or damaging the surface. Always avoid metal shovels, as they can cause unintentional damage. There are also some great electric snow shovels which have plastic augers which will minimize the potential for surface gouges. For larger outdoor spaces, you may consider a snowblower, whilst this will most definitely complete the job, but be cautious to not damage any surfaces.

Start Early and Often

Don’t wait for the snow to accumulate. Going out and regularly clearing smaller amounts of snow will make the task less tedious. This makes the task more manageable and prevents the formation of ice, reducing the risk of slips and falls. When shoveling, go along the grain of the wood to minimize the risk of splintering. Be gentle and avoid using excessive force to prevent damage and your arms will thank you for it! Use a big broom to brush away residual snow and slush to prevent ice build up. 

Snowmelt

Refrain from using metal implements to chip away and ice build ups, as they can cause scratches or gouges on your deck’s surface. Consider applying a snowmelt to prevent ice formation instead. Always do your research and choose products that are safe for your deck material. Some chemicals are known to cause damage. For example, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are generally considered safer options for wooden decks. Different deck materials require specific care. While most decks are engineered with the elements in mind, consult your manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure you’re using the most appropriate methods.
